Freak of Nature by Jannifer Powelson

Kristen Matthews has worked for months to ensure that the Nature Station's first Eco tour goes off without a hitch. But hauling a busload of nature lovers around the Door County Peninsula in Wisconsin has its stressful, and oftentimes, freakish, moments. Expecting breathtaking views of fall foliage and striking Lake Michigan waters, it's a shock when one of the passengers ends up having her breath taken away–literally! Longing for placid waters, Kristen and her team spend what should be a relaxing getaway working to uncover which one of the travelers is the killer, before the trip–or another life–comes to an unfortunate end. Travel along with the Nature Station crew, as they explore beautiful, but possibly dangerous, waters.

I have looked forward to author Jannifer Powelson’s third novel, Freak of Nature, and find it a is a wonderful addition to her Nature Station series. Following When Nature Calls and An Unnatural Selection, it was delightful to find familiar characters and take up where we left off! It’s also chock full of references to nature as befitting an author who is a conservation specialist and who has also written award-winning children’s books in the Rachel and Sammy series. Once again, Ms.Powelson weaves a nice cozy mystery story about a young woman who runs a local Nature Station and what happens when she stumbles over a body, but this time for the THIRD time!!!! It is fun to get to know Kristen a little better, as her relationship with Brett, the handsome INDR forester continues to deepen. The author’s trademark use of plants on the covers (using her own photographs), as well as her knowledge of sightseeing landmarks during a bus tour traveling from her Nature Station in Illinois to experience the natural wonders of Wisconsin, combines with her ability to keep readers guessing until the conclusion of the book. Now I can hope there will be a fourth one in the series eventually.
